Day 9 - Driving on Autobahn ~ Berlin to Wadersloh, via Magdeburg!

Again the famous Fernsehturm am Alexanderplatz.  This is a tourist destination in its own right but we were there to see Europcar and pick up our rental.

Siegessäule (Victory Column).  The first question this brings to mind - wait, has Germany actually won a war?  And the answer is yes, a long time ago. This was originally built with the Prussian war against Denmark in 1864 in mind.
Autobahn rest stop.  Bathroom and picnic benches.

We visited Magdeburg.  Tani had forgotten, but her Japanese grandfather had come here to study back in 1900 something. Basically more than 100 years ago.

We paid 2 euro to be permitted to take photos inside.

We found a huge modern shopping mall with a food court. There was an Indian stall there in the food court, where they only spoke German and Hindi (and Punjabi), no English. *mind blown*.  So we had to have a weird 3 way conversation to order. And for some reason, either out of patriotism or panduness, they made the food so hot it was almost unlemurable.  Fun but borderline unlemurable.

We had traditional German Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cake) at this traditional restaurant that was housed in a very quirky original building called the Green Citadel of Magdeburg. (The building is actually pink, but I guess it's green because it's environmentally friendly).

Autobahn time! The car we had (Mazda 3 hatchback) was actually quite nice but wasn't totally up to outrunning Mercedes and all that, so we didn't go crazy on the autobahn.

Tani bravely passing lots of cars and reducing time to get to Wadersloh...
Entering Wadersloh...

Hedwig, Tani's cousin, takes us out for beers at the one place open at 9 pm on a Monday night. We had a great conversation and Rahul enjoyed sampling all the beers on the menu.
